◐ GUIDE — LEARN TO SURF

Learn to surf in Lima.

Lima is one of the easiest places in South America to catch your first wave. Our home break, Playa Makahain Miraflores, is a mellow, forgiving point that rolls in beginner-friendly waves almost every day of the year — and it's a ten-minute drive from most hotels in the city. This is your no-nonsense guide to getting started.

Why Lima is a great place to start

Most travelers are surprised to learn there's a world-class surf coast running right through the middle of the city. The Costa Verde gives Lima consistent, organized surf all year, and Makaha in particular breaks soft and slow — exactly what you want under your feet on day one. No long boat trips, no fighting a crowd of experts: just a patient wave and space to learn.

What your first lesson looks like

Every lesson starts on the sand. Your coach walks you through ocean safety, how to paddle, and the pop-up — the move that gets you from lying down to standing. Once it clicks, you head into shallow water with the coach right next to you, and they push you into your first waves so you can focus on standing up and grinning. Nine out of ten first-timers ride a wave on their first try.

What's included, and what to bring

We provide the surfboard, wetsuit, leash, and a certified bilingual instructor. The water off Lima is cold year-round thanks to the Humboldt current, so the wetsuit isn't optional — but it keeps you warm and floaty. You just bring a swimsuit, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and some water. GoPro photos and video of your session are available as an add-on if you want to prove it happened.

Choosing the right lesson

If you're nervous or want the fastest progress, a private lesson gives you one-on-one coaching. Traveling with friends or on a budget? A group lesson is social and great value. Want the full experience with transport, photos, and snacks? The VIP package has you covered. See all options and prices on the lessons page.

Is it safe?

Learning to surf is one of the safer ways to spend a morning in Lima. Every Kamea coach is certified and trained in surf rescue and water safety, lessons run in shallow water on soft-top boards, and if the surf ever comes up too big we move to a friendlier spot or reschedule at no charge. Meet the people who'll be with you in the water on our team page.

Common questions

Can I really learn to surf in one lesson?

Most first-timers stand up and ride a whitewater wave in their very first session. We start on the sand with safety, paddling, and the pop-up, then take it into gentle waves with a coach right beside you.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Basic comfort in the water helps, but you don't need to be a strong swimmer. Lessons happen in shallow, waist-to-chest-deep water, you'll wear a wetsuit for buoyancy, and our coaches have lifeguard and rescue training.

How old do you need to be?

We teach kids from 7 and adults of any age. For younger children a private lesson works best so the coach can give full one-on-one attention.

What do I need to bring?

Just a swimsuit, a towel, and reef-safe sunscreen. We provide the board, wetsuit, leash, and a certified bilingual instructor.
